And what kind of iron can I take that won't constipate me even more than I already am?

I am 19 weeks pregnant and just found out I am anemic. I have been very tired no matter how much I sleep, somewhat light-headed, and like to crunch on ice.

I was told to start taking iron pills, yes you will get constipated, but I also take fiber pills since pregnancy wreaks havoc with my digestive system. I am planning on increasing my intake of iron-rich foods, too. Beans, eggs, broccoli, and salmon are at the top of my list right now. Also try to eat foods with lots of vitamin C to help absorb what iron you are already in-taking.

Well i had to take iron with both my pregnancies, as i had a very low iron count and was anemic throughout both my pregnancies, you become very tired, to the point of not being able to stay awake, and no matter how much sleep you get, you always feel tired. Im now 16 weeks pregnant, and when i was 5 weeks my dr put me on prescription iron right away, without even testing me, because i had it with both my other pregnancies. You can get iron anywhere, go to a natural health store and ask what type of iron to take while pregnant, they will help you. But if you have been to your dr. and they have done blood testing, i wouldnt take the iron unless your dr sees a problem. Getting too much iron isnt a good thing either....Goodluck and Congrats :)

Well I have a type of anemia anyway that I can really notice during pregnancy. You may feel dizzy alot, lightheaded, and very tired. Your doctor can tell you if you're anemic after a blood test. If you are constipated while taking extra iron, you simply need to increase the amount of whole grains and fiber you are eating. Extra wheat bread sandwiches and fruits and veggies will help ALOT and will make you feel better over all. And don't forget lots of water! Good luck, and take care of yourself.

Take ferrous fumerate. It is supposed to be non-constipating. I take it every day for anemia because I have an ulcer that bleeds. The other iron tablets me me sick to my stomach and causes constipation, and this iron does not. I had anemia when I was pregnant also, and because I was so tired I would fall asleep while standing at my job . I also craved ice all the time.

I've been aneamic for the past three years, but not pregnant...
The main symptom was just tiredness. I take iron pills and that makes me okay for a few months, then i fall back into being aneamic due to my poor diet...I haven't experienced the constipation symptom, but I expect vitamin C would be a bonus, as wlel as plenty of fruit.

Also, it will be beneficial for you to take vitiman C tablets because they help you to absorb the iron

Tired and cold. You can buy a time released iron that don't make you constipated or sick to your stomach. Ask the pharmacist, they will show you the best one. Also be careful of the ones made from oyster shell because they can contain mercury.

OMG I was so anemic and the iron pills they gave me made me vomit almost immediately after I swallowed them. Ask the doctor for an iron shot and take some stool softeners to relieve the constipation -- but only ones approved by your ObGyn.

I always get anemic during pregnancy. For me, I get more tired and stay cold all the time. My doctor always gave me small reddish pill to take. You might want to look up iron-rich foods and try adding more to your diet. That might be a better, natural way to get iron and not get backed up.

Eating red grapes, raisins & prunes will help with the constipation and give you a little more iron in your system too.
