Yahoo is taking on young Google with Yahoo Answers - a "smart" form of socializing.. If you notice they allow you to access the 360 pages (similar to MySpace) using Yahoo Answers..(Click on a person's name) - so Yahoo is taking on MySpace as well. And they just added Video... (YouTube.Com). One other strategy I saw to take on Youtube.com was made by LiveLeak.Com - they were one of the first to post the Saddam video... and if you look at Alexa.Com the strategy seems to have worked... Also, look at Del.icio.Us <-- At first seems to be rather lifeless and dull, but upon closer inspection seems to be working and, as a social networking site to share bookmarks and websites, it is superb (versus socializing using MySpace.Com which in my opinion is largely about people wasting time versus sharing and learning).

Microsoft- most people use windows applications

Apple- Ipod- they cornered the MP3 market first and made it cool and easy

Mcdonalds- Cheap food that people enjoy and multiple locations

They all have advantages because they were first in developing a niche. Other notables- Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Motorola, 24 Hour Fitness, etc.

Better to research it on the Internet. I doubt that any company is going to hand you over their strategy secrets.
