Yes was the best (both with Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin) followed by Queen (Freddy Mercury's vocals are phenomenal), Aerosmith, Pink Floyd (very creative lyrics) and Toto (made up of a group of studio musicians who were tired of getting no glory providing the great sounds on other peoples albums).
Less artistically adroit but definitely as memorable are Heart, Van Halen, Boston and Journey.

Queen and Pink Floyd! Scorps before they sold out, Heart before the slut song, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, STONES (although if you actually read their lyrics you'd know they were originally a Blues band)..and Yes, Foghat, Fleatwood Mac (put on an amazing show back in the day!), Dr. Hook, Black Oak Arkansas(yea, don't know whatever happened to them...), Lynard Skynard, Bad Company...this could take me a while to list them all.
Grunts and Roadrash sucked! Talk about the MOST annoying voice of the late 80's!

Dependes on your definition of classic rock. I would say any band from the 70's or before. Anything from the 80's and after is not classic in my opinion.
CCR is the best classic rock band in my opinion.
