I am building my own comuter. I used my computer mainly for running photoshop sometimes flash. sometimes I Like to multitask, so I need a processor that wont freeze up when I am using aim, opera, winamp, and photoshop at the same time.

I am also looking for something that is not extremely over the top/expensive

Given that you want to keep this machine for a little while, I would no go below 1.8. I would actually try to get a 2.0 if I could. Plus, Make sure you have a lot of RAM since Photoshop and Windows XP, which I am assuming you are going to run, are both memory hogs.

Go with at least 2 GHz either AMD or INTEL. Check the system requirements for your Photoshop software and make sure you don't get a processor that the software doesn't support. Max out your RAM or get at least 2 GB of the largest sticks. Try to get a PCI Express motherboard to take advantage of its supreme data transfer rates for newer video cards. That will help you with rendering a bit.

Happy hunting

Aim for 2Ghz, AMD Athlon XP. This processor is still relatively inexpensive, if that's what you're looking for.

You can find motherboard & AMD cpu combo's on eBay for around $100-150.

Also, look into getting about 1GB of RAM. You won't need 2GB, unless you're doing some heavy video editing.

A Pentium 4 1.6 GHz with about 2GB of RAM. RAM plays a larger factor when you want to have more applications open at the same time.
