It was an issue with potentional lawsuits in allowing people to think you could use a laptop on your lap. People were getting burns on their legs. So now the term notebook is used.
Now on most IBM Thinkpads there is an additional layer of protection so that this problem does not happen.

A "notebook" computer is smaller and thinner than a "laptop". The term "laptop" is a bit older and has been largely replaced by the term "notebook".
This may simply be a change in marketing terminology as they usually refer to the same thing (with the size implication in use).

It's very similar to a notebook in size, and it opens and closes like one. Also, you can take notes, draw, etc... on them both. It's called a notebook mostly for the similarities.

I don't think there is really a difference. Notebook would refer to the fact that many are the size of a book or binder and can fit will in a backpack or briefcase.

The names are interchangeable. I prefer "notebook" since I rarely use my notebook on my lap.
