This is what I found:

"With over 360 rooms, it took 17 years to build."

In 1868 [King Ludwig] commissioned Eduard Riedel to design the castle and the latter's plans were recorded by the stage painter Christian Rank in painted backdrops, thus producing further theatrical effect. The foundation stone was laid a year later. In view of the fact the three architects were involved in the building (Georg Doimann [sic: another source says "Dollman"] from 1874 and Julius Hoffman from 1886), each of whom had to adopt to the king's ideas, the consistency of the building work is quite impressive. The castle was not quite complete when Ludwig died, but the great hall was finished and the interior of the 3rd and 4th floors were almost ready.

The Neuschwanstein castle project foot print is just shy of half an acre at approximately 19,466 square feet. The longest line in the project is 426 feet. The building footprints cover 8,366 square feet. This castle was under construction continually for 17 years. 14 rooms were decorated by King Ludwigs death. If you visit the castle, with over 360 rooms, today they will show you 15 rooms.

You'll have to look some more, but I can tell you a little. It was built about 1860-1870 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. There are only about eight finished rooms inside. The throne room, the knights hall, etc. He was involved with at least one more palace called Hohenschwangau, which also took time and money, He was finally cut short about 1884 when a parliament or council of nobles declared him insane and deposed him in favor of an uncle. He neglected government and kept demanding grants of money for building projects. He drowned under mysterious circumstances in a lake at a mountain retreat soon after.

The grounds occupy roughly one acre. The rooms are small and some have low ceilings.
