At 5 months its considered a late miscarriage or might also be known as "spontaneous abortion" which basically means that for some reason or another the mothers body rejected the fetus causing the miscarriage. At 5 months one reason for miscarriage could be Incompetent Cervix. That happens when the mothers cervix does not remain closed and opens prematurely. It can be caused by genetic problems. I recently read about it on Web MD. When the cervix opens prematurely and at any point before 26 weeks the baby is too small to survive outside the womb a miscarriage occurrs. Hope this helps!

A woman can lose her baby at anytime during her pregnancy as long as the baby is too immature to survive outside of the womb. You are correct in that most people use the term "miscarriage" earlier on in a pregnancy and say that a woman "lost" her baby if this happens later on in the pregnancy.
Many things can happen that would cause a woman to go into labor prematurely. Things can go wrong with the baby or something could be wrong with the mother. At this late stage in the pregnancy they will be able to tell her what caused this tragedy. I am sure she will share with you as much information as she is comfortable with telling people.
She will need a great deal of love and support at this very sad point in her life. If you are a friend or a loved one, try to be there for her and let her know that you care.
Blessings

Anything before 26 weeks is a miscarriage, anything after is a stillbirth. Not that the difference means much.
Many things can cause the death of a baby in utero. Genetic defect, problems with the cord or placenta, certain disease contracted by the mother. Etc. These are rare, but they do happen.
Just be there for your friend and do not bug her for details.

My cousin just had a miscarriage and she was just about 5 months. Some of the ways are by falling, getting hit in the tummy. Sorry to hear her loss.

If she lost the baby at 5 months, it would be considered a still birth since the baby is already fully developed.
I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. This happened to my sis-in-law. We had a funeral for her baby.

I know this girl who was in a car accident and the doctors had to give her some medicine to save her life, but it killed the baby she was carrying. She was almost 6 months along.

Usually the baby dies in the womb and they have to do a D&C. She probably lost it.
