U.S.A. citizens should not be called “Americans”, given the fact that America is actually a whole continent and not a country. It would be as calling “Europeans” only Germans or Italians. What do you suggest?

lol, I never thought of that you're right though. It doesn’t make much sense unless when we say Americans we're talking about North and South Americans.

I suggest Americans, given that I'm talking about North and South Americans... but as far as the USA is concerned, I'd use
U.S. citizen.

I wish I could give you more than one thumb up, because this is a really good question.

I believe the official term for a citizen is "citizen of the United States of America." And to be fair, a region called America would need to include both North America and South America. It is usually understood that the term American refers to someone from the United States of America.

America is not a continent. North America is a continent and it includes Canada and Mexico. Therefore, it IS appropriate to call an American an American.

Yes, the continental mass is called North America, but so is the country that's located in it, which entitles us to be called Americans. It's the way its been for the last ever and is how we are identified the world over.

In other words, if its not broke, don't fix it.

I refer to myself as an American. It makes me upset that certain groups of people need to classify themselves or others. No matter what color or creed you are, if you are born in The USA you are an American. I do not refer to my native ethnicity ex: African American or Latino American or European American. I was born here and proud to be an American.

Don't sweat it, we're not offended. No one else calls themselves Americans but Americans.

Canadians are Canadians, Mexicans are Mexicans, etc.

We are Americans, people from South American are South Americans, or whatever country they're from (i.e. Chilean, Argentine, etc.).
