The Speaker is third in line for the Presidency. She would be sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She is not an automatic backup in case of the death of the Vice-President, or in case that the Vice-President must assume the position of President. She only assumes the position of President automatically if the President and Vice-President die at the same time; else, the positions are filled by appointments from Congress. If the Vice-President assumes the role of President, then He selects a candidate for the vacated Vice-President's position which must be approved by Congress. If the Vice-President resigns, is impeached or dies, then the same holds true.

Well, you only have to be 25 to run for the House of Representatives. In theory, someone between 25-35 could be the Speaker of the house. That person would still be qualified to be president since the succession is set through the constitution. They are following the rules for the office they hold. However in reality, since the House of Representatives elects the Speaker of the House, they probably aren't going to elect some newbie to the most important office in the House. They would elect someone with seniority and experience. So in reality, this would probably never happen. Good question though.

If both the President and Vice President were unable to serve, like both dying in a plane crash, the Speaker of the House is the next in line under succession of power. Lets say Cheney resigns, Bush can select a new Vice President through a process similar to selecting a new Cabinet member. It is worth noting that only a handful of times has a President not completed his term and that the Speaker of the House has never become President under this rule.

The presidency goes to the Speaker of the House if the Pres and Vice Pres cannot serve. Nancy would not make herself the President, the constitution does that.

Yes, Speaker of the House would come BEFORE the President Pro Tempore of the Senate... changed in 1947.

A common story (perhaps apocryphal) holds that President Truman moved the Speaker of the House ahead of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate in the line of succession due to the president's close friendship with Sam Rayburn, who was Speaker at that time.

And just for those who spout... it isn't the constitution, it's the Presidential Succession act of 1947... the 25th Amendment does NOT cover this issue.

The Speaker of the House is third in line after the President and Vice-President. The Constitution would make her President.

The near simultaneous demise of the Dumbya Coup after Jan 20, 2007 would have the result of President Pelosi says the Constitution.

Try reading the constitution of the United States instead of predictably reacting to the TV/Radio personality of your choice. Its been there all this time and I bet you never complained before at the thought of a President Hastert.

Nancy Pelosi would not make herself president, the constitution would make her president in that case.
