There are actually two teams.
The Florida Marlins:
Everyone said they were going to finish last in the division, lose 100 games, and just suck. Instead they finished 78-84, had two All-Stars, a Rookie Of The Year winner, Manager Of The Year winner, a no-hitter, and a player with 195 hits, 26 HR, and a .339 AVG.
The Detroit Tigers:
In 2003 the Tigers lost 119 games, a record for the AL, they also had one All-Star. In 2006 they won 95 games, went to the World Series, had a Manager Of The Year, and 3 All-Stars, and a Gold Glove winner.

I'll take one from each league. The Tigers are the obvious choice, but I'll throw the Marlins in the same category. They looked to make a run the 62 Mets 120 loss season like the Tigers almost did just two years earlier, but they wound up not only far away from that, but nearly finished .500 and were in the wild card hunt through the first half of September.

I would go with the Chicago White Sox. Everyone thought they would easily win thier division and maybe even get a chance to defend thier championship title. While the White Sox were good for most of the year, thier late season collapse cost them the playoffs as other very competitive teams, Detroit and Minnesota, emerged in that division. The AL Central should be interesting to watch next year.

Easy answer to that. The Florida Marlins. A team with that many young players and a first year coach in Joe Girarridi, (sp?) to be anywhere near the playoffs is amazing. When they fired him it was the worst move of the off season. When they made that big run in the second half it was amazing. Made me mad cause I'm a big Braves fan. Anyway thats my vote for most surprising team.

Well on the good side, I would have to say the Tigers. They came out of nowhere and made it to the World Series. On the bad side...
the Cleveland Indians. Everyone was picking them to go to the playoffs but everything went downhill after CC got hurt in the first game of the year. The Chicago White Sox also got some regonition since they went from winning the World Series to finishing 3rd in their division and out of the playoffs.

I'd have to say Detroit especially being in that AL central and being the best team in baseball for a large span of the season.

I vote for the Tigers. There's no way I would have put them in the world series before the season.
