I keep hearing people talking about them having an incompetent cervix. Are there any signs or things I can look for to give me a clue if I have this? I'm 19 weeks pregnant and worried I may have this problem. I get a pinching feeling in my vagina, not a cramp and not really a pain but just kinda pinchy. (hard to explain). Is there any way to tell before it is too late is my question. Thanks for all the info you can give♥

I have it and didn't know about it until I lost my son at 21w3d! He was 1lb and 1oz 10 1/2in long. My baby lived for 3 hours.

I had a lot of lower back pain for a few weeks. It was pretty bad and only felt better if I got on all 4's.

I woke up one night have some "cramps" and decided to make an appointment. They said my cramps were nothing and sent me home to " rest and drink water"

So I went home. I continued to have "cramps" sometimes they were regular and others they were not. Then I went to pee and found some blood so we rushed to the ER. I was found to be 3cm dilated with my bag of waters bulging.
I was put in a bed that was inclined so that I was laying more on my head to keep everything away from my cervix. I stayed like that and the plain was to get my cervix stitched closed but a few hours before my surgery my water broke and nothing could be done.

Unless this would have happened to me before there was no reason to check for it.

Any other pregnancy I have in the future I will have to get my cervix stitched closed and be monitored by ultrasound to make sure my cervix is holding.

You can request they do a VAGINAL ultrasound to check your cervix for thinning or dilating. This is how they check for it.

IC usually happens between 16 an 26 weeks. What happens is the baby starts to weigh to much for the cervix to support so it dilates. Most of the time Its called silent dilation because there isn't contractions, OR the contractions are considered cramps, gas or braxton hicks.

I also felt like he was low all the time like he would fall out....I know that sounds funny but that's how it felt! And my bladder was shot! I had to go then and there! I think all of this plus my back pain was my signs.

I recently did a lot of reading about this through web articles. I kept having a wierd feeling in my vagina similar to when you get a pap test done and was worried about incompetent cervix. I'm 17 weeks. After seeing my doctor turns out everything is fine. The doctor said sensations in the vagina could be caused by the baby moving and hitting a nerve or just being in a different position, etc. I guess it's very difficult to diagnose incompetent cervix before it happens. If you have a miscarriage due to incompetent cervix then the doctors can be on the look out for it with subsequent pregnancies. But what I also learned is that some women experience feelings of extreme pressure or a feeling like they have a lump in the vagina. After the reading I've done, that's all I came across. If you're worried schedule an appointment and have your doctor check your cervix for dilation. That's what I did. Hope this helps!

Sadly, the answer is no. And doctors will not insert a cerclage in each case as a preventative measure, because even a cerclage carries certain risks.

I just went through pregnancy and had a healthy son. I got those same pinching feelings that you are talking about. Still wouldn't hurt to call your OB and ask.

You could always ask your Doctor to check your cervix, or you could learn to check it yourself and see if there is ever any change,I'm sure if you catch it early it could be dealt with.
