The area of an ellipse is πab where a is the semi-major axis (half the long axis) and b is the semi-minor axis (half the short axis).

The circumference of the ellipse is a tough integral that can only be solve analytically when the eccentricity is 0 - in other words, when the ellipse is actually a circle. You have to do a numerical approximation and the formula you use is trade off between how much accuracy you need and how much work you're willing to do.
