Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons. The first was because "All Mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy." The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway myth.
The US Official Expert on marijuana testified in court, under oath, that marijuana could turn you into a bat.
That -- and even more ridiculous nonsense -- was how the marijuana laws first came about. When people hear the truth about these laws today, they just laugh. It is a hilarious story.
You can find a good summary of how the laws arose at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm It contains links to original source documents.
Every major study of the marijuana laws in history has concluded that the laws were lunacy from the very beginning. There never was a shred of truth behind any of the reasons given to make it illegal. They all said that marijuana should be legalized. You can find the full text of those studies at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer under Major Studies of Drugs and Drug Policy. There has never been a significant goverment commission that reached a different conclusion.
If you find anyone who thinks that marijuana should be illegal, then you have firm proof that they have never read any of the most basic research on the subject. Test that yourself. If someone thinks marijuana should be illegal, ask them if they have read any of what I have posted above. You will find that they didn't even know it existed and that they can't answer the most basic factual questions about the subject.

Pot originally became illegal for political and financial reasons. I won't get into it here, but I will say that it had to do with competition regarding paper production (hemp vs. trees), and energy production, and since the big boys (W.R. Hearst, etc) with all the money launched a media scare campaign back in the 1930's (see Reefer Madness, the original B&W movie) which scared the American population into thinking marijuana was a dangerous drug. Really, all they wanted to do was get rid of hemp, but since marijuana is in the same family, and is a drug, it was easier to scare the public into outlawing the plant and it's close relatives completely.
It is still (obviously) illegal today.
Pot should be legal, absolutely. It is less harmful and dangerous than alcohol, and compared to alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco is also much, much less addictive. Some people can become addicted, but that is true with many things.
It will never be legalized because there are many people who mistakenly believe it is a "gateway drug", or is more harmful than it really is. These people are viewing the topic with blinders on, and as long as alcohol and tobacco are legal, they really don't have a logical leg to stand on.
It will also never be legal because there are too many people in power (the Bush family for example) who have financial interests in things like paper production, gasoline and oil, and other commodoties which could possibly be replaced with hemp.
1/4 acre of hemp produces as much paper as ONE acre of trees!

Major thumbs up to artnerd! I've heard that the plant could possible provide an alternative source of fuel, and that Levi Strauss made his first pair of jeans from hemp.

pot is the #1 cash crop in America - more than corn or wheat!
Yes, it should be legalized for people over 21, just like alcohol.

I think it should be. But wouldn't it be hard to use for someone who doesn't smoke? I know, that was dumb, but I'd still like to know.
