My pictures with flash come out too washed out, and without flash too dark. I use a Sony Cybershot DSC-S40 and am looking for some flash, lighting, background or other tips to get good digital pictures of my earrings, bracelets and necklaces for sale on my website, ebay and etsy.com. I definitely want to do this myself, but need to know the secret!

thanks in advance!

I'm not familiar with your particular camera, but you need a camera that is macro capable. If you don't want to buy another camera, try working with a neutral gray background which will help to equilibrate the settings in digital photography and help get rid of the whiteout.

If you have photoshop or photoshop elements, you can fix the lighting easily too. All in all, as a photographer, I think digital pictures despite their convenience fail to measure up in quality to good old silver film.

There is loads of info on taking good photos of smaller objects (like jewelry) on this page at my site (with different kinds of setups, lighting, backgrounds, when to use flash and how to avoid it, making your own light boxes, and much more):
http://glassattic.com/polymer/photography.htm
(It's at my site because we have to deal with this issue for our polymer clay jewelry and other items all the time.)

You might want to check out the "Scanning" subcategory on that page too... that works surprisingly well even for dimensional items.

(There are also links to other sites with lots of info there as well).
