I'm a BIG guy that can stand to loose not a few pounds, but a whole heckuva-lot of weight! I've been told that building muscle helps burn fat. But doesn't muscle add pounds too? I was thinking, cardio with a proper diet, (that doesn't include, cheese cake and washing it down with a milk shake) to get the weight off at first. Then some weight lifting. I think that I'm on the right path. Is there anything else that I can add to this, to get things off the ground and running? No Pun intended. Oh yeah...Happy New Year to all...

Best of luck with your weight loss challenge.
Muscle does weigh more than fat, it takes up less space to, and yes it helps burn calories, so if you start to lay down a small amount even now it will help with your goals faster.
Take it easy at first, and join a reputable gym.
Good luck.

A few months ago, I was EXACTLY in the same boat as you. I had lots of chub, and I just wanted to get rid of it. One thing that helped me was that I grew from 5'11 to 6'1 in a short period of time, making me much leaner and skinnier. Another thing that helped was a change in diet. I didn't count how many complex carbs, calories, or whatever I was taking in, but I made sure to eat ONLY and I mean ONLY when I was hungry, never otherwise, as the over-intake of food and fats was getting in the way of my losing weight with exercise. Happy New Year to you as well, and may we all wish it is a skinnier one!

No. You need to lift weights, do cardio AND diet at the same time. You don't have to worry that you are going to gain more weight. Building muscle actually help to get the weight you have...OFF. So, eat right, do cardio AND weight training.
