How do I comfort them, and what advice do I give when we both know that he got fired for a bad reason given by the company because there is not enough work right now. Our company has been laying off people left and right because it has slowed down. He is a foreman for a pipeline co. here in California, Riverside

I have been in the same situation. It's awkward to comfort/talk to someone who has been let go from a company or business where you are still employed. The best thing you can do is just let them know that you understand, and are there for them if they need you. Some people don't take well to sympathy (even thought you may be sympathetic), so just play it by ear, your gut will tell you what you need to do/say. There are TONS of jobs out there, and tell him not to sweat it...it just wasn't meant for him to be there for some reason. Who knows, maybe he escaped a horrible accident by being let go. One never knows these things. Just be a friend and be receptive to his feelings. Take care!

It's a real blow to the ego, even when for a bogus reason. Encourage him to file for unemployment right away. Also, since he is in California, if this stresses him out a lot, he can see a shrink and file for disability insurance. Pays better than unemployment. Max is $750 a week vs/450 on unemployment.
Chances are he can get a new job quickly though. Just keep up the positive aspects, like one window closing, another door opening and all that stuff.

You said it is a bad reason, but then you said business has slowed down. Its hard but if there is not enough work the company can't afford to keep paying everyone. It sucks but just be a friend and comfort him.

Was he on yahoo answers just like you are?? Maybe thats the real reason he got fired. Just kidding! Seriously though show that you are a little bit concerned about the lay offs but do not mention anything about him being directly fired. You could be next.

That really sucks. It just so happens that most of the time the higher up you are the more succeptable you are to lay-offs because of the amount you make compared to everyone else.

Tell him that at least he gets a severance and unemployment - most people don't get that.

1. File for unemployment.
2. This is not an obstacle, but an opportunity for advancement and finding a better job.
