I think that's okay to do, a selfless act really, because they gave you money for Christmas but you chose to use it to make someone else smile instead of getting something you really wanted for yourself :)

if the money you received from your parents was intended as a gift, then it is your to do with as you please, and I think it's nice that you spent some on someone else instead of blowing it all on yourself. Now if the money was sent with the intent that you use it to pay your bills or something because you are struggling, then maybe you should have used it for yourself.

That was nice of you, and yes it was yours to spend, since a gift has no strings attached. It's all the same, no matter which of your own bank cards you use to pay for something. The money they gave you added to your prosperity which is yours to decide what to do with.

Are there expectations on how or where you spend your money such as tuition or lodging? If they expect you to spend it a certain way then you are obligated to a point. Would you be willing to tell them that you spent it on someone else. IF you must hid it then there may be something wrong with the situation and not necessarily with you

Well, they gave you the money with no strings attached right? If so, you're free to do as you wish with it ethically. Morally, I think they would've have wanted you to spend it or save it for yourself.

This has nothing to do with morality! It is YOUR money as a gift---you can do what you want with it! If it wasn't a TRUE gift, then they would expect you to use it in a certain matter. It is a gift, therefore use at as you desire!

I don't see a problem with it? It shows how kind and giving you are. You thought of spending the money you could have easily spent on yourself on someone else. Aww. :)

If the monetary gift was given unconditionally, there is no ethical issue. Spend it as you like.

It won't matter if you still can afford to go visit but if you can't afford to go well then you need to do some soul searching. What will you say to your parents? Will they forgive you? Will you forgive yourself?
