Egyptian movie "Al Maseer" or "The destiny" won the Golden palm award in Cannes festival, 1997.
it was directed by Youssef Chahine.

EDIT: In 1997 a film shot in Persian won the Palm d'Or but it was not Egyptian it was Iranian and it was called Ta'm e guilass or A Taste of Cherry (in English).
