There's nothing stopping you opening an account with a broker in India who will buy and sell US shares for you. You can even open an online account from India with a US based broker. I live in the UK and have opened an account with TD Ameritrade in the US, the idenification requirements to open the account online are more complicated but the trading costs are much lower. Unless Indian law applies foreign exchange controls (limits the amount of money you can take out the country) here are no limits on what you can invest.

If you chose a decent broker they should be able to buy shares from any reasonably large financial centre (London, Europe, New York, China, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney...). Bear in mind that a lot of the worlds largest companies issue shares in New York. These are called ADR's and trade in dollars - exactly like any other share on the American market. So you may be able to invest in all the foreign companies you want to by just getting a US dollar broker account.
