Whichever you prefer, it does matter. Getting a young one is always fun because you can see it grow, and it can get to know you as its feeder. It won't really miss you when you're gone, but they can recognize different people.
Anyway, all babies grow into adults eventually, so do make sure you have an adequately sized tank (minimum 60 gallons for one).

You know you want a baby! Oscars are like dogs, they watch your every move, they miss you when your gone. It's a beautiful, smart and loving fish! We are talking about a 10 year or more relationship! It would be best to get them young so they can get to know you and trust you. Now if you have a chance to adopt or save an adult then please do the right thing. I adopted one from Petco years ago and I call him lucky. What you decide to do is fine, but never buy Oscars from Walmart...NEVER!!!!

I would say baby ones due to the adult Oscars aggressive behavior and they are very Territorial. They also get very large i had three for many years that were well over a foot long each. Also i had to due a partial water change in my 55 gal tank every 2 weeks do to them being very dirty fish.

Everything depends on if you are only planning on One oscar or more. If you prefer to get more than one than I would def. start with the babys. Another good thing is that you can teach them to like pellets and you wont need to buy feeder fish right away.

Go to the fish store, look at the little ones, the big ones, etc. Find the one that has the personality and look that you like the most and get that one regardless of the size of it.

It's very rewarding to watch your tiny baby fish grow into a big healthy fish, so I say baby.

Babies are cheaper and they grow fast. It also gives yur tank time to adjust chemically to the big fish.
