Even more than that. They are elected democratically and by now refusing to accept the result, the US is saying,we promote democracy if you vote for who we like. There were two parties, one had been in power for a long time, hammas was the only alternative and besides doing indeed things that are acceptable to no one they also do social programs and are very active in Palestinian society in many different fields. It's not weird the people elected them.It was them or Fatah, they wanted change

Well it is not just President Bush but several countries that recognize a terrorists organization when they see one.
Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by Australia,[7] Canada,[8][9] the European Union,[10] Israel,[11] Japan,[12] the United Kingdom,[13] and the United States,[14] and is banned in Jordan.[15] According to the US State Department, the group is funded by Iran - which is Shia and similarly funds the Shia Hezbollah, Palestinian expatriates, and private benefactors in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states.[14] In a 2002 report, Human Rights Watch stated that Hamas' leaders "should be held accountable for the war crimes and crimes against humanity" that have been committed by its members.[16]

hamas was democratically elected, and we all know of all the crimes hamas committed and still does. Doesn't this tell you something about the majority of the palestinian population? They are terrorists, besides wanting to destroy Israel and deny its right to exist, they want to destroy anything and everything that is non-muslim, they hate America, even if Israel ceases to exist, they will always hate America because they clearly know how inferior they are compared to America and this is something that their religion doesn't allow, since the majority are Christians.

What does Democratically Elected have to do with Bush? He likes dictators in China, and Russia. He likes monarchs in Saudi Arabia and Jordan. He does not like Democratically elected Hamas or Democratically Elected Ortega in Nicaragua. He doesn't like Dictatorial North Korea or Democratically elected Ahamadinejad in Iran.

Hamas is a terrorist organization, and if the Palestinians want to elect them that is fine, but don't expect the world to accept them when they keep their terrorist activities alive. The world would accept Hamas if it would focus its energies for the good of the Palestinians and not the destruction of Israel. Just because you were voted in, it doesn't give you carte Blanche to keep up the terrorism activities.

Bush realizes that fact. He refuses to recognize Hamas because it is a terrorist organization.
You are just a little off on your facts.

Israel is one small nation surrounded by many that want it gone, Yet I find so many that continue to blame Israel for defending herself. How can YOU fail to realize that Arafat and his ilk were intent on the destruction of a nation solely based on their religious beliefs? How can you fail to realize that a nation as small as Israel cannot sit back and wait placidly while those around her build up their militaries for war with them? How is it possible for a liberal to bash Israel when they seemingly scream for U.S. intervention in any other "underdog" country they choose to back? Israel is the little guy, those nations around her are the playground bully and the bully has a knife to Israels throat every day. You would ask the jews to stand defenseless again like in germany of the 30's and 40's? You sicken me. I am a german/irish catholic american

Bush misspoke when he said that Hamas is trying to stop democracy. I believe that he meant that they are not working properly within a democratic system.

I doubt our nation's refusal to do business with Hamas has anything to do with democracy.
Has mostly to do with the terrorism. And the fact that Israel is our ally.
As an aside, Hamas really doesn't bring anything to the table that we need, and that is how business is done.

How many Israeli's were allowed to vote in a Palestinian election?
