Put his socks in a separate tub with 1 tblspoon of bleach to each 1/2 gallon of water. Let them set there for 15 minutes. Then, continue to check them every 10 minutes afterwards, until you are satisfied with the whiteness level.
Also, you can put blueing into the wash water of an all white load. This has been proven to make whites a very bright white. This is how the eye perceives between just white and very bright white. Go to a sewing store for the blueing.

You'll probably think I'm CRAZY but...this WORKS! I do it about every 2 washings...Take a bowl and put one scoop of powder detergent...then, add about a cup of bleach to the bowl...take a wire whisk and mix it up real good...sometimes it may even look pasty...start the machine on hot and let it fill halfway...put the paste mix in the machine and let it agitate a few times around...then...put your clothes in and wash as normal but give an extra rinse...then dry as normal...clothes are white as new...

P.S. You can also do this with you colored clotes...just put the machine on cold and do the rest as above.....:)

I have hard water (well water) and actually the best thing I have found is a product called iron out . It makes all my whites totally white .I love It.
