I just need help with the random break-down, flat-tire, etc. Do they help in a reasonable amount of time? What kind of cost am I looking at yearly? Are there any cheaper options?

I really won't benefit from the travel discounts because I rarely travel...

Hi,

I'd like to start off saying that I'm not a big fan of AAA insurance, but I really like AAA membership for towing.

We got AAA for 60 bucks a year for the towing. We have older cars, so when they break down we get them towed. Basically we've used it 3 times this year alone, so it's paid for itself. Imagine I had to pay 75 bucks per tow, that's 225 bucks. Plus it's better than trying to deal with a tow company taking your insurance. I've only had one time where I had to wait a long time, usually they arrive in less than an hour (I'd say usually about 30-45 minutes). When the tow arrived very late in this one situation years ago, it was the driver's fault, not AAA.

I'm not trying to sell you on it. We don't really go on trips or use the discounts (lame), but it's more than worth it for the peace of mind it gives me. I carry my card and a charged cell everywhere and I feel safe. I'm a car guy but I'm not in any shape to push a car anywhere anymore, plus why BOTHER? When I think back to how many cars I've pushed or towed with my dad's regular truck, I think, why??? My back is too messed up to do it, plus I'm not 16 anymore, so AAA takes the worry out of it for me and my wife.

On the side, you can use it to get your friends towed.....you just have to claim it's your car (have the license plate number handy)and you might have to be with the car with the card, they don't always check the card anyway. I had them move a buddy's car and I thought I had to be there, but the tow company didn't even care and moved it before I got there. We used my uncle's membership for our cars for years and then we got it ourselves because it worked so well and we wanted to be, well, more honest.

I'd get it, they do a good job getting someone out to you and you'll get to be the hero when you're friends lock their keys in their, I mean, YOUR car....ahem. The only thing I don't like is the junk mail that we get from them, which is not a big deal.

Take Care,
Brian

You get what you pay for. In PA for 90 bucks I get free up to 100 mi tows, lockout service, gas if you run out etc. I think its 4 times per year. They usually take about an hour but it will be just as fast as any other club you call. Free maps, titling services, travel agents and discounts on lots of stuff are all good reasons why to have it.
There are cheaper options but none have been around as long or have the same number of members nation wide.

If you travel a lot or if you are taking a vacation it is great. I have also experienced grat road side service. They have opened my car when locking my key in and changed a tire. They sometimes take a very long time to react but all in all the service is great . The discounts a pretty good as well.

I think AAA is essential, especially for a person who isn't mechanically inclined, isn't likely to be able to change a flat, has a vehicle that is no longer under warranty, or who father or boyfriend is more than 20 minutes away at any given time.

I'd also get Plus which is about $75 a year. the basic plan is $50, in Missouri anyway. Visit their website. sometimes they run specials.

Check the paperwork and see what the procedures for obtaining service are. Some make you pay for service and then pay you back (at their leisure). Are you forced to take the car to the dealership when being towed? I have road service with my insurance company (no extra cost) but keep AAA because it is more convienient.

in early january of 2004, a pothole that just formed had put 17 cars out of commision, on flat tires, in the space of 8 minutes. on my street. i was one of them.

every single one of these cars called triple A, i was not one of them. i had triple A though.

i got out and changed my tire, and taught the chick in front of my car how to change her tire, by herself. i drove home. an hour later i drove by again, heading to go out and buy a new spare tire. the people were still waiting.

that's just one isolated event, and it's possible that they ARE fast. and honestly, the yearly fee isn't that much, when stacked against what it could potentially save you.

hell, if you run out of gas, they'll come bring you gas!

i was a member for five years. never had a problem that i couldn't handle myself, but perhaps i just lucked out. it's nice for assurance though

AAA has towed me during a flash flood. Brought a battery to me and installed it. Brought me gasoline. Unlocked my car when I locked myself out. I wouldn't be without it. Their arrival time is about 20 minutes.
