Ok, when I first got my hammie from Petsmart his pinky toe was bent backwards and his toe nail was yellow and brittle, but it didnt bother him cuz he was running, jumping, eating ect. doing fine. I then began to cut the nail off cuz it was getting VERY long. He did fine after I cut it off, it would just grow back and then I would cut it again ect. But then one day it fell off on its on, now his foot is swollen, bloody, and just HUGE. He still eats, drinks, ect. but I dont what to do...he runs ALL night in his wheel, should I take it out to give his foot healing time?? If I take it out the he jumps up and down on the glass FOR HOURS!! Can I put anything on his foot WITHOUT making him sick ect.? What should I do?? I wanna use peroxide but Im scared will it hurt him? Someone please help me.

hunny, calm down! you can put hydrogen peroxide! leave the wheel in there if it starts hurting bad enough he will stop on his own. what probably happened was you cut the toe nail to the quick. there toenails & stuff are not llike ours. theres a vien in there. if you cut it it will infect it! the reason it is swollen is cuz he probably keeps licking it. when you put the hydrogen peroxide on his foot put a little bandage on it. not like a band aid put i of those bandages you can get at wal-mart for humans. it comes in colors & it sticks to itself. its like some kind of wrap. i wish i could remember the name. i know its going to be big so cut it to fit. the bandage will keep him from messing with his foot, keep the hydrogen peroxide on there, & keep shavings & other stuff out! you will need to change the bandage twice a day. put the peroxide on with a cotton ball.

never cut his toenail. take him to a groomer & they will trim it, like they trim bird toenails. shouldnt cost anything. its ok though we all make mistakes!
iF IT IS TO BAD CALL A VET PLEASE!!!

There is nothing you can do at home to take care of this yourself. Nothing applied just to the foot will clear this up, the hamster has an infection now. It needs antibiotics which you can only get from a vet. May even need the foot amputated at this point, depending how bad it is. Please find a qualified vet.

NO PEROXIDE, please! Peroxide tends to do more harm than good. It has a tendency to eat away at healthy tissue as well as infection. Try to find a good small animal vet in your area (or check exotic vets too). Your hamster needs antibiotics. Hope this helps.

did she step on something or cut her foot? it could be infected or just extremely irritated. it could also be something more serious. go to a vet. even if it is nothing you are better safe than sorry

i must agree with lunarkry. she gave the same answer i was going to say. while calling around for the vet, check to see if they have somebody experienced with small animal and or exotic animals. yes, hamster is considered an exotic as with other rodents. i wish you and your hamster luck ( so does my hamster, sniffles)

you could bathe the foot only in warm salt water, but it sounds like it is infected and needs antibiotics
