According to some legends the magic folk were summoned to Oberon's realm to escape the savage men rampaging through the world.

The simple answer is because they don't exist (now or ever).
Those who claim to see such creatures are most likely mistaking what they experience: Certainly they saw "something"; but a quick glance in a dark wood, with a creative imagination, a preconceived notion of supernatural creatures, and a lack of trying to explain via natural causes... voila, you have a pixie (or ghost or alien...) instead of, say, another small, quick, reclusive critter: a chipmunk.
Oddly, it is in fact "close mindedness" that STOPS one from investigating their world; they already have the answer (it is a pixie, I'm certain). Open minded people are not so certain, they need to be skeptical, they need concrete evidence (an "eyewitness" is NOT concrete evidence by the way - people can easily mistake what they see - ask any magician).
When dealing with such claims we must seek out the evidence. Though science cannot "disprove" the existence of pixies, it can show them to be quite improbable (science doesn't really "prove" anything either, it simply "shows a greater support for" something). We should use our reasoning skills to examine the current evidence and then come to our conclusions; not just make unsupported claims because "we want it to be true" (luckily, science is adaptive and amendable with new evidence).
Interestingly enough, the history of the belief in pixies has them originally as tree spirits, not physical creatures, so even those who first believed in them wouldn't believe an eyewitness today.
Even so, the burden of proof falls on the one making the claim, not the skeptic. And given the current evidence, the correct position is, "they don't exist".

"These days", we have science, education, and a far greater understanding of social and mental ailments. Given the fact that Pixies and Elves do not exist, we can rule out Earth Science and consider social and mental causes. Total illiteracy was commonplace during our superstitious past, don`t run away with the daft image of happy rustic peasants living in rural heaven. These were thick people who understood little ,and invented things to "fill in the gaps". Forget the nonsense that these days we have lost touch with the `other Worlds`. Truth kills fiction, and in so doing, Fairies, Brownies, and other daftness, died also.

In this 'scientific' age satan uses a different kind of fairy/elf/pixie to lead people astray. Namely aliens.
You don't need to do much research to see that people involved in the occult (ouija boards/witchcraft/etc) are also more suceptible to 'alien experiences'.
The idea that 'aliens' have supposedly travelled billions of light years and appear mysteriously with occultic messages, is in fact scientifically implausible.
But many people clearly believe sincerely that they have had experiences with alien intelligence. I don't doubt it, but it's not from another planet. Satan and his demons live on earth.
Check out some of the articles here if you're interested in researching further.

Probably for the same reason no one will admit they see ghosts or god or aliens or anything else out of the ordinary because if they did they would be ridiculed. As for the oberon realm thing, I dont know what that is but I agree, if they really did exist they probably did what most aliens would do, run away, if I could run away from humans, I would too.

Over time people lost the ability to see into that realm of existance. Some people still can see into it, they are the ones that talk and see spirits, aliens, etc. They just don't talk to much about it because of criticism in today's cinical world.

Keep in mind that those creatures are nature creatures. Can you imagine a brownie being comfortable dancing on the concrete? I certainly can't.
Every year, there are fewer places on earth where one can see the night sky, unobstructed by high rises and bright street lamps. I think that the same thing is happening to the nature guardians.

elves etc belong to a group of entities that are energetic in nature, as opposed to humans and amimals who are organic.
since religion began to teach us that these things were evil and began burning and hanging people for witch craft whenever they would claim to see such things our fears helped us toclose down the part of our consciosness that allowed us to tune in to those realms. also the culture we have developed since has contributed to a further shift away from being able to see.
and the natural habitat of these creatures has been eroded by our expansive city building, noise pollution etc.

They had better drugs. Seriously, people still see that stuff. It's just our culture is so focused on the artificial....tv, video games, ect.....that we don't ever allow ourselves to be open to those sorts of concepts. Take a nice trip to the woods for a few days, with no modern devices. You'll see them, if you're meant to.
