The main thing I want is to run one ethernet cable to a pc, and then run one cable to a router. The reason that pc can't be hooked to the router is it needs to access a VPN, I really don't want to buy a VPN capable router.

Sure, the PC can be hooked to the router. You just need to configure forward the right ports to get the VPN to work.

All a VPN capable router does is allow site-to-site VPNs, where an entire network is connected into another one. A normal router should be able to route the ports that a VPN connection travels over... I have a non-VPN capable router that I am connected to at home, and I use my home computer to VPN into my work's network.

you need to plug the router directly to the dsl modem, then plug the pc/s into the router. the router should come with a software cd to help you set this up. it's a piece of cake.

Sounds like you'd need two DSL modems for what you're doing.
