I don't know exactly how far back it dates, but the traditional chicken run of Mardi Gras was carried over to the New World a few centuries ago. It's still done today in small Louisiana towns such as Elton, Mamou, and Iota. It's great fun and completely unlike the Fat Tuesday atmosphere in New Orleans and in other places. That's what I consider commercial Mardi Gras. Don't get me wrong, it has its place and is fun, but for traditionalists, the chicken run has no rival.
