Alot of them are really stupid scams. They tell you how great you are and then ask you to pay fifty bucks for a book. Try entering into maybe a school competition for poetry. Or some magazines have a section where they put random peoples poetry and sometimes have contests.

I use Poetry.com you can post your work on their site and they choose some pieces for publication once a quarter or so. The books are expensive, but you don't have to buy them. Copyrights are retained by you at all times.

You do not have to seek out copyrights. As of 1998 with the copyright term extension act you own all rights to your work created during or after 1978 for your lifetime plus 70 years until you decide to sell all or part of the copyright for the work. Ideas or facts cannot be copyrighted...only your unique combo of words.

Look into magazines as well. There are a number of really good poetry & writers magazines out there that hold contests and print. Good luck....

There are several websites that publish poetry. The one that I use the most is called poets2000.com. The material remains your property and can be viewed and responded to by many people. There are also sites such as National Library of Poetry, Amherst Society and others who will publish your material in book for,...but they will ask you to buy one of their books.. Scam(ish) I know, but it is nice to see your work in book form. But one of the best sites for publishing is call LULU.com. They actually walk you through the proccess of publish a book and make it available on line for purchase.

Take a peek at those.

The first thing you need to do is copyright your work, so no one can claim it is theirs. Poetry is very popular--you should check around your local area for open mic poetry readings. This will put you in contact with other poets who can help you out. Also get in touch with local printers or publishers, they can help you out too.
