The Ki is a secret key in the SIM card. It cannot be read. There is a copy of this key in your network Authentication centre (AuC) This is usually part of the Home Location Register.
When you turn your phone on, the MSC (exchange) generates a random number THis is sent to the handset and the HLR. The handset gives this to the computer in the SIM card. The SIM card and the HLR use the Ki in an encryption algorithm The results are sent to the MSC. The MSC compares these 2 numbers - if they are the same, the SIM card has been authenticated. Another number generated from the Ki is used to encrypt the radio traffic between the handset and the base station.
The IMSI is the globally unique ID for the SIM card. It is a 15 digit number. It is used to identify your account on the HLR (not your phone number)
