You should join a band first,
and do gigs at local coffee shops and maybe restaurants,
my friend is in 3 bands.
And he said that he's thinking about making a demo CD someday so he can make and record an actual CD.

you need to know, or meet, the right people. don't quit your day job, though. i have plenty of friends struggling to find a career in music. here's what they've been doing:
1. make friends who also play instruments
2. start a band
3. make a sound no one has heard, and everyone likes (important)
4. get gigs (shows)
5. play often
6. hope you get discovered by an agent
that's your best bet, good luck man!

A college education.
My son will be graduating from High School this spring and going on to college for Music production and education, with a concentration on Guitar. He's quite talented and actually can play several other instruments. He's in two bands, school orchestra and chamber. He also writes music and lyrics, plays both electric and acoustic. Owns five guitars, a cello, mountain dulcimer, Sitar, bones, bongos, penny whistles (five in totally, all in different keys), three recorders (not those crappy plastic things you played in grade school, but professional wooden ones...also in different registers), Ukulele, Mandolin and plays each one very well!
Best thing I can say is to expand your instrumental repertoire as well as musical style repertoire.
Go on to college, take some music theory, composition and performances courses.

Join a band, start a band, play solo. Get out and play and be heard. That's the start. If you are good, you will have a career in music. Look at all the American Idol winners as examples.

If you find out, let me know!!
Seriously, there are SO MANY great guitarists out there, there's more players than there is demand for them.
Success is a crapshoot, I'm afraid. Luck is everything.

Don't quit your job and stay in school, the truth is, you have to know or blow someone to really make it in the music business. Sad but true.
