R actually stands for radial.

P stands for passenger.

go to Tirerack.com and it has a section that expalains this. Also you might try Firestone.com or Bridgestone.com. Years ago they had excellent explainations on tire terminology.

P for Passenger
175 is the tread width in Milla Meters
65 is the percent of width the tire is tall
R for radial tire
and 16 is the Rim size of the tire opening
