Baseball is very protective of it's image more so than any other sport. Football and basketball do not even come close. It was the betting on baseball thing. Not his personality.

I think this question and those about Barry Bonds comprise 1/3 of the baseball questions asked here... No, Pete Rose should not be allowed in the Hall of Fame. As far as there being other people in the HOF who weren't saints, that's absolutely true. But this isn't about drinking or partying or tax evasion or some other personal failing. It's specifically about betting on baseball while working in baseball. He knew the rules. He took the chance. He lost. It's sad, perhaps even pitiful, that he did things that are preventing his induction to the HOF. But he did them. Other people argue that he gambled as a manager and not as a player. If that is true (and who really knows) you can't seperate what he did as a player from what he did as a manager. He was an employee of Major League Baseball during both phases of his career, just in different jobs. And he broke the sport's #1 cardinal rule: No Betting on Baseball. The rule isn't "No Betting on Baseball Unless You Bet for Your Team". It's "No Betting on Baseball". Period. Every baseball employee from the lowest minor leagues to the major leagues knows the rule. Pete Rose made a conscious choice to disregard it. Then he lied about it publicly for 14 years, not that that should influence anything. It's simply another example of his extremely poor judgement. Look, Pete Rose was a great player. No one can deny that. But you don't give the world's best surgeon his profession's highest honor after he loses his license because of severe malpractice. And you don't honor a ballplayer with election to the Hall of Fame after he broke the mother of all rules. No one who ever saw him play will ever forget what he could do on a ballfield. The memory of Pete Rose as a player will live in the hearts of baseball fans for a very long time. The difference between him and the other greats is just that Pete Rose will not have a plaque in his honor sitting on a wall in a museum in Cooperstown.

Listen, we all have to be responsiable for our actions. For every decision we make there isa reaction and somtimes consequences. Before we make these decisions we have to ask ourselfs if we are willing to pay the price. Now if it were a one time thing than maybe we would see a different outcome but I still beleive the powers to be will not see ythis in Petes favor. Now I am not one to cast judgement and I remember watching every game waiting to see how long the hitting streak would last. I think in time another generation will see beyond his faults and one day he will be in the Hall of Fame. By the way I was there this summer to see Bob Dylan Play and I noticed some Pete Rose Grafetti in favor and sings on peoples homes both in favor and aginist his entrance..

No, that's not it! LOL

Pete Rose is not in the HOF because he has a lifetime ban from baseball for illegally gambling on baseball games.

Pete's an ***, but that's not why he's not a HOF player. Pete was my hero when I was growing up. Pete gave me hope, because you could say a lot of things about Pete, but you couldn't say he was an athlete. Neither was I. What I learned from Charlie Hustle, was that if you busted your ***, you could make up for a lot of shortcomings. Then he bet on baseball. MLB doesn't care if you bet on your team or another. If you bet on baseball, you're done. The rule is posted in EVERY clubhouse, majors and minors. They read it to the players EVERY year. Pete accepted the ban from baseball and he's admitted to betting on baseball. That and finding out there is no Santa Claus are two of my biggest disappointments in life. The penalty for betting on baseball is a lifetime ban from baseball. Since he is banned from MLB, he is ineligible from the HOF ballot. Pete has no one to blame but himself.

Yes, I absolutely believe that Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame. He is the all time leader in base hits, and he was a part of two World Championship baseball teams. I don't know if you or anyone else knows this but, I can name a few players in the Hall of Fame that their character should have com to question before they were inducted in the first place. First example, Ty Cobb. It has been well documented that he is the all time leader in batting average. However, it is important to keep in mind that he was a racist too. To me, being a racist is much worse than being a gambler. Another example, Gaylord Perry. Perry is allegedly one of the greatest strikeout pitchers of all time. Yet, he has achieved his success by throwing an illegal pitch called the spit ball. Another candidate is Don Sutton. Won 300 games in his career. He is known for using sandpaper on the baseball. Cheating on the field is worse than gambling off it. I will go to another sport. The Pro Football Hall of Fame has O.J. Simpson who committed murder, even though he wasn't convicted. There is a murderer in the Football Hall of Fame. The last time I checked, murder is worse than gambling. So, Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame. If they Hall can have inductees who were racists, cheaters, alcoholics, womanizers, and in the case of the Football Hall of Fame, a murderer, then Pete Rose should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

He was, but then so was Ty Cobb - Cobb was also a racist among other things. Rose should be put in the Hall now while he's still alive and can enjoy the glory. He's paid his dues and admitted his wrong-doing, what else is left?

A little...but the Baseball Commissioner was an asshole as well. If Rose hadn't bet on games he was a participant in, he'd probably be in the hall.

Pete deserves to go in before Mark Mcguire does.

Rose's only connection to baseball should be allowing him to be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame. However he shouldn't be allowed to participate in any way whatsoever with MLB. There are plenty of a**holes and degenerates in other sport's halls of fame. You gain induction into the Hall of Fame by your production on the field.
