I have a combo hood that finally died. I've had it for awhile and since then alot of new things have come out and I want to and need to replace the combo unit. My old combo unit held a UV tube light and had 2 places for light bulbs for heat.

Can all you reptile lovers tell me about the coil UV light that is used with a dome light? Is it good? Do you recommend it or should I go back to a combo unit? The only thing about the combo unit is that the whole thing needs to be replaced if one element dies : (

Advise about not so expensive UV and heat lighting for 50 gallon tanks please?

PS: I obviously would also have another dome light to emit heat.

I have two separate heating units for my 100 gallon tank. I have a spot heat lamp emitting the highest wattage available and a separate heat lamp that emits the UVA and UVB rays necessary for the reptiles. I see no need to return to the combo unit except for personal preference, and they are not as readily available as the separate units. Any pet store will have the lighting equipment you need i.e: the UV component which includes the bulb (about $30 ish) and the spot lamp holder and bulb (about $25). Then after you only need to replace the bulbs, not very frequently. Hope this helped! :)

it all depends on what you are trying to heat up and give uv to.

Most good UV bulbs ARE going to be expensive, even the smallest ones I've seen are no less than 15-20 dollars

i don't think of your tortoises will die being without the sunshine for some days, however the only element i will think of which you will do could be to place them close to a window so as that they might get extra organic easy till you need to purchase the right bulb. Rigging up electric powered gadgets may well be risky for you and your pets in case you don't understand what you're doing, so i does not possibility it, and that i does not subject too lots. only get the recent bulb asap and that they might desire to be A-ok!. :) stable luck! i'm hoping this helps! :D
