but my friend told me i looked like a refugee from the eighties. I looked around and realized no one else was dressed this way. When I first started aerobics as a teenager, everyone dressed like this.

You might wonder how i din't notice. I've been woking out for a long time now, but I always go alone, work hard, and leave. Untill I went this one time with my friend, i never even looked at anybody else much.

Look! Your work-out, your call on how you dress...PERIOD! Don't let other people dump their insecurities on you. Do what you want. If you've maintained a work out ethic since your teenage years then you have NOTHING to be ashamed of. Tell your friend you're not interested in what you look like you're interested in getting the workout.
On the other hand...if this is something that bothers you, something that you honestly didn't realize and don't want to look like a "refugee from the eighties" then just look around you and make the change. I guess my point is..
Does it matter? Only if it matters to you!

You should dress in a way that makes you comfortable in the gym. Since you're used to wearing a leotard and tights, there's no reason to change. It's true that most women don't dress this way in the gym anymore, but that doesn't mean you have to look like everyone else. You've established your own style and shouldn't let your friend try to change it.

it doesn't matter the way u dress to the gym if u r not self consious. since u mentioned u didnt really think abt it so it means u did not mind dressing like that. i personally do not think it matters. u r just going to the gym to get that workout u want for fab results.

If you feel comfortable with it do it!! It may not be the current fashion statement at the gym but make your own!!!
If you don't feel comfortable not fitting in there - then wear what the other ladies wear... but don't feel that you have to because it is "not in". =)
