The 96 uses the same trans fluid as your tranny, Mercon I believe. I haven't owned a Ford since my 94 Ranger so I can't remember the name of the brand.
It might be a big help to you to purchase the Chilton or Haynes repair manual for your vehicle. All fluid specification and capacities can be found there.

Your transfer case uses automatic transmission fluid. Your truck uses Mercon or equivalent Fluid for both the transmission and transfer case.

they use transmission fluid in all of the newer ones,,it will use the same thing that your transmission will use ,they started this some years back because the fluid cools,and lubricates better,,but that's whats in it,good luck hope this help,s..its mercron,,or dexron lll in it,,good luck.

as a general rule of thumb...........an automatic trans and transfer as well as a manual trans and trasnfer take the same fluids.
manuals take 90wt
autos take atf .

just reguar gear lube you get at the auto parts store, if you have the extra there is this stuff called purple power works great i use it
