Too many, to keep allowing pet "stores" to keep trafficking animals. You should always go to a responsible breeder if you are going to purchase any pet. It's the only way to stop these impulse buys that wear thin after a short time and then we have another unwanted pet.
Those pups and kitties are not so cute when they start costing money and destroying property.

I don't know if any one knows those figures. Especially since many animals die and people that do adopt them, don't report finding an abandoned animal. I can tell you by experience, I live next to a park and many people think that a park is a great place to abandon their animals, thinking they will find homes. Not so. Most of the time, it's the residents near the park that ends of dealing with the animal because people that go visit the park think it belongs to the neighbourhood. Residents near the park are saturated with unwanted animals. They have gotten all they can care for. I have literally walked up and down streets in my neighbourhood looking for someone that would take the animals so I didn't have to send them to SPCA. Recently a group of neighbourhood children found two small Guinea Pigs in the park. One of them was hypothermic. You could see absolutely every bone in both of these guinea pigs bodies. None of the parents would let the children have them and so they had us take care of them. Because they were so thin, I wasn't holding out much hope for them. One of them died three days later and the hypothermic one died two weeks later.
