Most of our celebraties are just trash. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Whitney Hoston, etc are all but trash. Could someone give a better example.

Celebrities and sports people are generally not good role models because they are egotistical, driven by greed or plagued by sex, alcohol and drug scandals. Not all of course, but the majority that we hear about.

However, they are the most visible to children so try to choose some that are kind and decent people, and I'm partial to people who are involved with charities and who do things for seriously ill children (as opposed to just donating money to get tax breaks). Tom Hanks and Ron Howard spring to mind, but kids probably consider them passe. Let them watch some good old tv reruns like The Andy Griffith show......
My favorite was the late Steve Irwin and it's not too late -- they replay his Croc shows all the time on Discovery channel, plus Bindy will doing some future work. From him, children will learn to respect animals and if they respect animals, they will usually also respect people. Mr. Irwin was also a loving family man and though he is deceased, his legacy will live on.

I don't keep up a whole lot with sports but if I were to let children watch say, an interview with some sports people, they would be people like Michelle Kwan from figure skaing and Mary Lou Retton from gymnastics. I would have also had Michael Jordans name but just this week he announced he and his wife were splitting so that might be hard to explain to children. But he does a lot for charity and I'm not aware of any scandals about drugs, etc., with him.

Kids generally look towards youthful celebs and I'm sorry, the young celebs and sports people I see just aren't what I'd like my kids to copy. I speak for the majority; I'm sure there are some who are OK but I just don't know which ones.

Of course, as parents, we should start out as being the best role models :)

Most of our celebrities are just trash, but not all of them. Ever since I was about 7 years old, Alicia Keys was my role model. She is my role model because she inspires young children. If it wasn't for her, I would've dropped out of school a long time ago. Now I'm a 16 year old Junior at O.Perry Walker Charter.

Maybe we should consider being role models to our kids rather than leave it to someone that lives in a fantasy world. My role model is my grandmother, but maybe that just makes me odd that I don't want to grow up to be a Paris Hilton clone (minus the spending account)

Carrie Underwood. (American idol) There are not many these days. Get kids in a church where there are good youth leaders. They make good role models. There are alot of football players that belong to the christian athletic assoc. Find teachers that stand for good. Don't allow kids to watch crummy TV programs. Reduce the opportunity to identify with the trashy element. Be a role model yourself. Stand up for good and right. Jesus is the ultimate role model. Lift Him up to kids. Lots of luck.

Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, Reese Witherspoon, Denzel Washington, Raven-Symone, Alicia Keys. Sorry I can't think of anyone else. If you have any kids, why don't you sign them up for Big Brother Big Sister? They could be a good role model for your kids.

The most important role model in a child's life should be his parents. I think the parents are their first ones to set the mark.

I am so glad my 12 year old doesn't idolize Eminem anymore - even though I thought he was cool too. Now my son goes to church and listens to country (lwhich is what my husband listens to). So he likes Tim McGraw and Josh Turner. Of course, this could be a phase too.
I am just glad I don't have girls.. they are the ones with the worst role models and the highest expectations of themselves. There is too much trash out there now. My idol was Debbie Gibson.. who is like that now??
