I will be traveling alone to Cairo January 15-29, 2007. I would be interested in traveling to other countries in the area. Iraq and Iran would certainly interest me, not necessarily in the Big Cities.

Could one fly, take a train, or some other form of transit? How about the cost of such travel? Any other suggestions on places I should visit while in Egypt? I visited Kenya in April and it was great. I am an American male.

Thank you.

I would consult the U.S. Government travellers advice service, before I would consider going into Iran or Iraq at the present time.
It is unfortunate as I too am anxious to go to Iraq.
I was advised by the Australian Government that it was definitely a no go zone for non military personal and those without government approved permits for, diplomatic affairs, trade etc.
In any case they would not approve anyone to travel alone in these two countries and a few others you have not mentioned. I'm pretty sure it will be similar in the U.S.
Egypt is perfectly safe,I travel there at least once a year from Australia and have no problems. I adore the country, the people and the culture modern and ancient.
.I feel safer in Luxor than I do in Melbourne.
In Cairo go up to the Citadel. Also take a trip on the Metro to Old Cairo. Its another world.
For spending cash. there is no place like Khan el Khalili.
Maybe after you go to the Museum you can go for a felucca ride on the Nile at sunset to unwind.
Of course you will go to the pyramids and see the Sphinx, don't forget the great Old Kingdom temples there and the remains of the workers village and cemeteries.
Pick up a copy of a Lonely Planet Guide and log onto Tour Egypt,it has all sorts of really good info. without the high pressure advertisements. It is the Government Tourism Web site and has blog links to all over Egypt
As well as great articles on every Egyptian topic you could think of.
Make sure you visit Luxor and stay a couple of days over on the West Bank.
It will be a memory you will treasure for ever. There are some great places available to stay. At really good prices too.
Its not so touristy as Luxor city. Which is a great place as well. So much to see and do!
Its so nice to slip into the feel of a village community like el Gezira.
I am an Egyptology student and stay there, as its so close to the Valley of The Kings etc.etc. If you want to go to Karnak, take a boat ride on the Nile to get there and back. It will cost around 50L.E.
If you need some addresses and contacts for drivers, boat rides etc. email me.
Take care with hiring local agents and guide. Most charge the Earth and know nothing. The more they push, the bigger the con!
Have a ball and Good Luck.

The second part of your question:
to travel from Cairo to Iran or Iraq.
Yes. Logically you can. you can travel by air. I know that if you reach Amman- Jordan, you can fly to Baghdad Air Port in Iraq, Or to Tehran Air port in Iran.
Iraqi Airline is operating flights from/to Baghdad.
Other ways to travel from Egypt to Iraq/Iran is dangerous and I don't think you will be able to do it in a war time like this.

So, the safest way for you is to fly.

From Cairo going east, you hit the Suez and then a vast wasteland with no roads. If you get a land rover and provisions, you can drive but I think flying is better. Small planes are cheap! (especially now)

Get your visas way ahead of time and change your money only in British banks. They don't record and the rates are fair.
