I am assuming this is a cultural thing, your providing for your parents in their older age? Why not sit with your parents & go over investments, 401K etc...to help them to provide for themselves. Not saying you will not help them just as a fall back measure. Who's to say that once you follow your dream, you'll want to stick with it. You may not like it. Or it may turn profitable in the future...But I do think you should follow your dream even if it is only part time. I would hate for you to follow your parents advise & then resent them later. There has to be a compromise.

Yes, unless it won't even give you enough money to survive. Then, you should continue to be involved with it (in some form) as a hobby or part-time position (if possible, like with art or something), to get your foot in the door. Then, pursue it as a career. If you can't afford it, don't abandon your job. You do need to eat and a place to live. You're parents shouldn't be so selfish. When you're older, won't you be paying for your kids, too? So, you're supposed to provide for them and put your kids through school? I know several people that care for their parents, which I think is a great thing to do, but most parents I know say they don't want their kids to have to do that, but their kids do anyway, which I really think they should. But the point is that their parents don't MANDATE them to do it. My problem with your parents' statement is that they want you to be miserable your whole life for their benefit.

I beleive that no matter what the pay, your passion is more important. If you enjoy what you do, you'll be good at it and therfore make money. Dont worry about your folks they'll get over it. When it comes to your future you need to be selfish and consider yourself and your dreams first cause you're the one thats going to have to live with whatever desision you make not anyone els. I advise follow your passion the rest will fall into place!! Good luck and enjoy!!!!

Why do you have to give your parents a good life? That is not your job. You give yourself a good life, and if you can help than you help. Being happy is important in a job, but I have found that paying the bills is more important. You will find your niche in life and hopefully you will love what you do and get paid well to do it.

You have to go with what makes you happy. Follow your heart and things will work out.

wha? your parents are all growns up. if you're going to suffer for anybody, suffer for your children.
but anyway, nothing is worse than going to a job, day in and day out, that makes you absolutely miserable. you can;t do that to yourself. money doesn't buy happiness - do what you love.
