it was in the 80's (early) It was a movie about a girl figure skater and she needs a partner. A hockey player partners with her. One of them ends up dying in a plane crash at the end. Champions: A Love Story
This movie was made for television in 1979. Jimmy McNicol, the brother of the child star Christy McNicol, plays a hockey player that becomes a figure skater. He is paired up with actress Joy Leduc who plays a young single skater that must consider pairs since she is not making it in that branch of figure skating.
The two become friends and fall in love as they train. Then, McNicol is killed in a plane crash, but Leduc somehow perseveres and skates again in singles. The movie ends on a happy note.

The Cutting Edge (set in the late 80's thru early 90's) but released in 1992. Neither dies in the end though.

the cutting edge but it was not made in the 80's it was made in 1992 with db sweeny and moira kelly. "toe pick" is a memorable line from it. rated pg.
