Why didnt you get the V5 from the previous owner when you bought the car? If they have lost it you will need to send away for another from the DVLA, which can take up to 6 weeks for a replacement. When it comes n take it along with insurance and MOT to ost Office and they do it there and then for you.

You should have the 'V5 supplement' - the wee green bit that YOU keep so you can tax it etc.
You also need to produce your insurance to tax it.
You won't 'get into trouble' - but the sooner it's SORN'ed the better. Also, as you are the new owner - you just tax it from when YOU took posession of it - before then it's not your responsibility.
ADDED:
You only got the PURPLE BIT! (Section 11) You've been issued with the wrong bit as that is the NOTICE OF PERMANENT EXPORT that meant to only be sent to the DVLA to say the car is being taken out of the UK by the last UK owner. You NEED the green section 10 to be able to prove you are the legal owner. (New Keeper Supplement). Contact the DVLA as soon as possible in order to establish that you own the car.

I did mine online. The MOT has to be the computerised one, and a valid insurance certificate. It took seconds. Tax disc arrives in post within days. You cannot drive the car although technically you are taxed. The offence would be NOT displaying valid tax disc. If you have just acquired the car, the rules of SORN do not apply to you, it was the previous owner responsibility to tell DVLA that it was off the road.

Have you got the section of the v5 for the new owner? The bit that doesnt go to the DVLA? If you have you can tax it with that.

if you have the green bit of the v5 with the bar code on, you can tax it with that, or theres no other way you will have to wait for a v5 to arrive in your name. if the logbook has been sent off to dvla in your name and they have recieved it and processed it, then you can go to your local dvla office, fill out a v62 (application for a logbook form) and tax it there, but only if the vehicle is in your name.

go to the post office fill in the form to apply for a new v5 (log book) you can then tax it at the same time over the counter. Only at larger post offices
