When I remove my USB pen drive, do I need to safely remove hardware? It seems a kerfuffle.

If you happen to be writing to the USB drive or it is active when you disconnect it, you can damage the boot sector on these devices and as a result, you will be unable to read the data or use the pen in the future.

I've heard of two cases: One was a USB 1GB keychain, the other was a compact flash card for a camera.

This may or may not have been caused by removing the drive without using "Safely remove", but it seems like a strange coincidence. The guy admitted to removing the USB drive "unsafely" off one PC and then tried to attach it to the other PC and it stopped working for the 6-10 foot walk that the guy had to do between the PCs. (And of course when he brought it back to the original PC, it still was not working and had to be replaced...with all data on it lost)

I guess you just need to make sure that no program is writing files to the usb flash drive at the moment or needs the drive for executing a program. The inbuilt function of windows is probably a good way to make this sure but I personally don't use it because it is annoying and the data on my drive aren't that important. So far I've never lost a file.
Though, for people who want safety it's not recommended to do what I do.

Of course you need to do it. I removed my USB pen drive several times without proper removing. And the result was my drive was damaged.

Yeah, just to be safe, click on the bottom right hand corner hardware icon and click the stop button. Then you can remove your hardware. Otherwise there is a small chance that files can become missing or corrupted. It happened to me once, when I just took it out.

The only time you can remove any USB device is when you get a message "Remove device safely" removing it at any other time may damage device.

before everything, in case you opt to proceed applying those drives, i'm assuming you mean bounce drives, then do not use good do away with Hardware. once you are attempting this it stops the interest of that tension and rpevents it from any added use until the gadget is restarted. purely unplug the gadget and you may reuse it later.
