Yes, and the moral of the story is still valid, but it also still makes me uncomfortable.

I have always seen books like THE LORD OF THE FLIES as cultural and educational, but not recreational. In other words, it's an important book to read, but not much fun.

I read it when I was about 15 and had difficulty understanding all the underlying adult themes. Re-read when I was about 40 and fell in love with it. The aggressive and predatory nature of the boys was incomprehensible to me at 15 but by 40 I had much experience of the world. I don't recommend for young people (despite what English teachers say).

We had to read this my freshman year of highschool. I liked it and read it agian recreationally later. In class we also watched the original movie which was still in black and white. Great Movie. About the time our class was finishing up hollywood released a color remake so my friends and I went to see that. Not so Great Movie. They cut out too much stuff and their were parts where you could see the microphone hanging down over the shot.

If you have to study it I would recommend reading it, but you could also get it on audiobook from the library and listen to it on your walkman on the bus etc - it will fly by. And there is a movie. They often change the plot in movies though.
