All the previous answers are very good. One of the reasons L&O (all of them) has lasted is because they take situations that have actually happened and fictionalize them. The medical possibility of someone being able to do what she did is there, even if somewhat difficult to accomplish (do you know WHERE to buy a cattle prodor how to harvest semen?), but the fact that it can be done, and probably has been done, is what makes this series so watchable. What stops it? Better education for people on not being victimized, the Police, the Court system, if we're lucky.

Nothing really. It probably HAS happened. I've noticed that a LOT of the SVU shows are taken from true events. THey put that "this is fictional and does not represent any actual person or event" disclaimer just to play it safe, but many of their episodes are indeed "ripped from the headlines".

The episode that cinched that assumption (that they use real stories) for me was the one about Genesis. They were investigating this group called Genesis that helped homosexuals or transgenders (can't remember which) to "become straight". I later read about the group in one of my university textbooks! Of course I have no idea if the murder/controversy they were solving was true or not, but the group itself was exactly as it was portrayed in the show.

Our conscience. The girl was a psychopath you are putting her in the same class as all women by envoking that question, I guess we should assume then that all men are abusive, rapists, pedophiles then?
