If Kaite opened a school here in New York and hand picked only white children would that make her racist? Or a person who can do what she wants with her money?

No a white person couldn't get away with that, the media would have a field day with that. The 40 million dollars opera spent on the school wasn't all hers. She excepted cooperate donations and donations from other celebrities, Opera's contribution was less than half. I just wounder if she told the contributers that it was going to be a black only school. And for all of you who say it's not black only then why did she say when asked: Why are white girls not allowed in her school, her reply was: "I don't feel like I have to appease the white people of this community." That statement is aimed directly at white society in America. Just like in Katrina how many white, Latin, Asian, families did you see her helping. There were plenty of white, Latin, Asian, and other races that were affected buy Katrina, but all you saw her helping were the black people, which I think they deserved to receive the help but people of other races needed help too. For her to fight for civil rights for all these years and point her finger at racist along the way, this incident has really opened the eyes to the American public and now Opera's true feelings are starting to surface. A lady with as much power and influence as her has to lead by example, and that is exactly what she has done. Unfortuantly she has led the wrong example. What Opera is doing by not allowing girls of different races into her school is discrimination in it's simplest form. I just hope she is not teaching them to be racist too.

First of all--somebody correct me if I'm wrong-- I don't think Oprah's African school is for blacks only. I saw a video of the students and there was a white girl standing beside Oprah.

Second, Al Sharpton (sp.?), Jesse Jackson, civil liberties, the media, not to mention big mouth O'D, would take Katie Couric's head off if she opened a school for whites only. I don't care who you are, or how rich, you do not open a whites only establishment in this country.

I have had the same dirty thought myself. Why was it okay to open a blacks only school? Kind of balances out the whole Michael Richards thing, don't you agree?

---people keep saying here "Well it's in Africa... what do you expect?" The point is Oprah chose the locale for the school. She could have picked a burrough of NYC with a mixed population. Or a spot in Ireland that is economically depressed and predominantly white. But she chose a place that's predominantly black. So saying "Well, it's in Africa" in no way addresses the charge of racism. If anything, it just supports the fact that she's a racist at heart, and chose to gift a black continent so she could skirt the issue or question "Is she racist?" Some of you are buying the swindle, I see.

Good question but I do not think Katie has any where near the money that Oprah has. I suppose it would be no different than you going back to what ever country your parents or grandparents are from and building a school. Ireland, Germany, Australia or what ever.

great question! i do believe oprah is a racist. i used to love watching her show but for the past couple of years she has been playing the race card. it is subtle, but if you watch the show on the regular it is noticeable.
a person can do what she wants with her money but if katie couric did it,she would be a racist and all hell would break loose. white people don't get a music channel, white people don't get colleges just for them nor do they get college scholarships just for being white. and why don't they get these things??? because it would be racist. see the double standard here?
we live in a world of hypocrisy and though oprah thinks she is making it better, she really isn't and it is a shame.

pick up a newspaper, she is opening a school in Africa, and in Africa the majority of the poor kids are black, its very rare a white person in Africa is poor. And if Katie did that in Ireland or a predominantely white area with poor kids, no that wouldn't. Also Katie don't come close to the kind of money Oprah has, and please leave the racist card out of this one...

Both! If it's a school for whites only that in fact would make her a racist. Successfully opening the school would prove she can in fact do what she wants with her money.

Yes it would make Katie a racist. I think it also make Oprah and Montell and Jessy, Al, and all of the black who over look poor white kids. It is rime to speak up! Not all white kids come from privileged homes! Some white kids come from poor homes and they need financial help going to school as well. The youth of today should not be punnished for the misdeeds of their Grandparents. I was not raised to be a biggot. My Grandpas best friend was black, my fathers best friend was black. There are no all white schools. There are no all white TV.stations. If there were there would be law suits galore! But what about reverse discrimination? My best friend is black and she agrees with me!

oprah opened a school for kids in africa.
The children in africa that could use a leadership school are mainly black and its built in a fairly poor area.

why not cry sexism, that school was only for girls. No boys? what boys dont need leadership training?

Oprah had picked white, brown and blacks for this.
If you look at the first class of girls, there are whites in that class as well.

please get your facts straight, and instead of fooling around with this idea a racism, think of how many opportunites these you girls are getting being put in a school like this.

This is a pointless question because Katie Couric would never open a school for "whites only". Katie would never discriminate like that.

Katie would only pick "perky" people.
