I quit the 1st of January - for the same reason that you want to quit. I have tried quitting before using nicotine chewing gum (not an option if you want to get pregnant), but started cigarettes a few months later both times.
This time I have found it very easy to quit thanks to a fantastic book called "Allen Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking". I am not irritable, I don't feel stressed in any way, I don't even want a cigarette. (And my husband still smokes so I see them all the time). The book is a kind of "brainwashing" that makes you want to stop smoking forever. He simply tells you about the brainwashing that takes place all around us (movies, peer pressure) and makes you realise that you are a drug addict (yes, nicotine is a powerful drug). And before you know it, you will want to quit.
The book is available on most major bookshops on the internet. I bought mine (I wasn't even planning too, I just saw it while I was looking for christmaspresents) for app. 5 $, which I have allready saved in the last six days.
Please read it, it is a very cheap and powerful way to quit. (Well I guess it is only my sixth day, but it really seems to be working). You can read more about Allen Carr and his books and clinics on the website I have provided.
Good luck - with both TTC and Quitting Smoking.

Hi. Here's my history. I was a smoker for 13 years. This past April my husband and I started to TTC. I was worried about the same thing you are. However, it was hard for me to quit AND stressful. Stress is not good when you are TTC or pregnant, of course we cant always help that. I thought I wouldnt become pregnant in an "early" time frame because I smoked. I stopped worrying about quitting and we concentrated on TTC. In August I tok my pregnancy test and I was pregnant. Wouldnt you know 5 days later I was cigarette free!!!!! Once your pregnant it will be much easier to quit. I use to smoke 1-1 1/2 packs a day. No one, from my friends and family, thought I would actually quit but I did and shocked them all. I didnt even have the cravings-- I knew what was growing inside me and that was way more important to me then lighting up a cigarette.
So my advice, just do what feels right and dont stress about the decision you make. My dr was behind me 100% knowing I wasnt going to quit until I was 100% sure I was pregnant.
If quitting is to hard now, wait until you know you are pregnant. It's easier and you hvae more to focus on.

It would be better for you to quit now...for the health of the baby...
With that being said...please wait until you are off the patch to try to get pregnant. The chemicals in the patch are nto safe to use during pregnancy, and coudl harm the baby shoudl you become pregnant and continue using the patch.
I was a smoker up until my 6 month of pregnancy (shame on me)...and it was VERY hard to quit (still is now)...but I did it cold turkey...
Some people can do that, some people cant. Just try your best and dont beat yourself up over it. Smoking is bad for your baby and for yourself yes...but so is all the stress you will encounter when trying to quit. So please make this a done deal before getting pregnant.
Best of luck to you, with quitting and TTC!

Maybe you should think about the effect on the baby. He or she is really going to have serious health problems. Possible birth defects. My wife is a smoker, I'm not, it's killing me. She quit for 2 years and I felt great. People come around waving their cigarettes and of course things happen and they don't care if they get somebody hooked again because all they want to do is sit in your house so they can smoke, some friends. Now I'm on singulair when I need it. the moral: your going to kill the one you love if you keep it up. So don't do it. Don't ever do it because you'll regret it everyday waking day of your life and think of all the reasons why you can't quit. Believe me, the best to ya.

Avoiding cigarette smoking triggers will assist lower the impulse to smoke, but you can not prevent cravings entirely. However cigarette yearnings don't last long, so if you're tempted to brighten, remember that the yearning will pass and attempt to wait it out. It also helps to be prepared ahead of time. Having a strategy to deal with cravings will assist keep you from giving in.
