Its a writable CD. You can burn your files to.

Lots of computer users use this a a method to back up important documents, files, photos etc.

The other usages also are a way to save downloaded music and have them burned to a CD so you cam play them on a portable device other than your computer.

A CD-RW has nothing to do with memory, or RAM. How ever one could use it for secondary storage to free up there hard drive and then simply work off of the CD.

It may be associated with Primary Storage if you intend to back up your primary files or anything that is important and you do not want to loose or maybe make private. This is a good way to make it only viewable by yopu as well as you simply place the CD in your CD-ROM drive so you can read or view the contents. (Others Can't)

Hope this has helped you!

c-secondary storage

In computer storage, secondary storage, or external memory, is computer memory that is not directly accessible to the central processing unit of a computer, requiring the use of computer's input/output channels. Secondary storage is used to store data that is not in active use. Secondary storage is usually slower than primary storage, or internal memory, but also almost always has higher storage capacity and is non-volatile, which makes it perfect for the preservation of stored information in an event of power loss.

Storage devices in this category include:

* CD, CD-R, CD-RW
* DVD
* Flash memory
* Floppy disk
* Zip Drive
* Hard disk drive
* Magnetic tape
* Paper tape
* Punch card
* RAM disk
* External Hard Drive
* Blu-Ray

Almost all storage devices are either magnetic or optic. A well known exception is provided by flash memories (used in digital audio players, usb stick memories, etc.) which uses a different approach.

The secondary storage is physically formatted according to a file system format, such as ext3 or ntfs which provides the abstraction necessary to organize data into files and directories, providing also additional information (called metadata) describing the owner of a certain file, the access time, the access permissions, and other information.

It can be used as secondary storage if you first format it with the software that came with your burner. However, there is a downside to that. The CD cannot be read on another computer unless the Reader program that pertains to your specific burner's software, is present. You can download the reader at Nero or Roxio and try putting it on another computer for reading purposes.

I haven't tried this yet because flashdrives and external hard drives provide more storage space than CDs.
