A family member passed away this morning. It may appear insensitive, but can I cash a check she wrote and mailed to me two days ago?

yes you can.

however you will need to do it quickly if there is any chance that their finances will be put on hold pending any inheritance issues.

If the cheque was written before the person died the bank have an obligation to honour it.

Maybe, but go do it, now. If you wait, they may notify the bank
that she has passed away. If that happens, the bank freezes the account until her estate is settled.
The only way you can get the money then, is to wait and go see the executor of her estate and present the check (keep a copy for
yourself). The executor will add you to the list of her creditors and it may take as much as 6 months to a year to get the money.
(You'll get a different check. Usually a cashiers check.)

As long as the account is open and has funds to cover the check.
