I am a 22 year old male and am in good health except for this spare tyre that I carry around my middle and what could only be described as the startings of man breasts. I am very interested in trying to sort my life out and gain some bulk - not heaps - but something that I can be proud of instead of ashamed of.

My problem is I am confused with what I have read. Some say I should work at gaining the muscle first and then lose the overlying fat. Others say that I should work to trim down the fat first, then build muscle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Ryan

There exists a slight possibility that you have some kind of hormone imbalance producing this syndrome ("gynecomastia"). However, if you are certain that it's from being a general lazy slob, then don't bother. If you are active and exercise regularly (5-6 times a week) but still have this problem, that's about the only way that you have decent certainty that you have a hormone imbalance. Otherwise, you're just getting fat from being inactive.

Your first and foremost task will be to kick it on the treadmill. Spend around 20 min per day for the first two weeks, then bump it up to 40 for two weeks, then 60. From there, you should start to see all that fat melt away. After you've gotten the fat off, look at yourself in the mirror and decide whether or not you have enough muscle to satisfy yourself. Then you can determine if you need a weight regimen.

Your first priority should always be weight loss and heart strength.

Building muscle is the typical macho-guy answer, because it'll be easier to do and it makes you feel great about being all muscular. But then if you can't maintain it (happens to everybody, look at Arnold S.), it all turns back into fat and you're back at square one. Fitness is about cardiovascular strength and appropriate body mass.

A low fat and high protein diet will help you achieve both goals of losing fat and building muscle. It is possible (and advisable) to work on both at the same time. Having a cardio workout 3 to 5 times a week and a weight building workout every other day is an efficient way to lose fat and gain muscle.
When you have stronger muscles your metabolism is boosted and your body burns more fat.

If you eat right and exercise regularly, you will find that your body will both shed fat and gain muscle simultaneously. Keep in mind that it's a gradual process, but you will see noticeable results after a few weeks of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Do the abs, sit ups etc and some light jogging. Try light weights with high repetitions. You will not muscle if you keep the weights/ reps balance correct.
