I recently upgraded my laptop, from one 512mb stock and one 256mb stick, to two 512mb sticks of RAM, logically making it 1.22GB Ram, but it only makes 0.98GB Ram. Why have i lost some? I assume that because it is more than 512mb my newly installed chip set must be working correctly. The chip sets are PC2700, which is correct for my laptop. Thanks.

Your computer is sharing your RAM with your video card. My primary laptop has 128MB of dedicated video memory, however, at times it will draw an additional 128MB from the RAM to help out some. If your laptop has dedicated video memory you should be able to turn off the sharing of the RAM through your BIOS. However, with 1024MB it is not a big deal to be losing a small amount of RAM unless you are doing RAM intensive gaming or high-level programming. 0.98 GB is about right for the system pulling 64 MB to use on your video card.

Good luck and let me know if you need any help getting the sharing turned off if you have dedicated memory.

Note, 512MB + 512MB = 1024MB or exactly 1GB, not 1.22GB. That being said there can be differences in the readings of the memory, for example, my laptop has 1GB of memory but reads as 1022MB, don't ask me why, I'm still figuring that one out. I wouldn't worry about the discrepancy that much but if you want to make sure, get into your BIOS and see what it says about how much memory is installed, it'll say something like "Press Delete to Enter Setup" at the bottom of your screen when you first turn the computer on though the keys may be different for you, press them and see what the BIOS says.

in case you have the skill then purchase 2 1GB RAM in any different case upload 2 512MB RAM. overall performance is only about a similar. the only disadvantage in having 4 512MB RAM is theres no room for added improve except you regulate each and all of the modules to 1GB. in case you're a gamer 2GB RAM is better than sufficient. better improve your video card fairly.

Te missing memory is being used by the video card (mos likely you have one of those that share the memory with the system).
